Pre-Tony Awards Party June 7 Benefits Angel View

April 25, 2015

Broadway’s biggest night is Angel View’s afternoon. Toucans Tiki Lounge is presenting the second annual pre-Tony Awards Party benefiting Angel View, a nonprofit serving children and adults with disabilities. The party takes place at Toucans, 2100 N. Palm Canyon Drive, on Sunday June 7 from 4-6 p.m. before the Tony Awards.

“We can’t say enough about Michele Cinque and the amazing gang at Toucans for their efforts on our behalf,” said Walt Johnson, MD, president of Angel View. “Last year’s party was a wonderful success; this year’s is sure to be even more fun. We also thoroughly appreciate Lulu California Bistro’s generosity in providing hors d’oeuvres, and the support and philanthropy of all our sponsors.”

"We at Toucans are honored and excited to be working with Angel View for the second year on this very worthwhile and fun event,” added Eric Lynch, PR director at Toucans Tiki Lounge. “ So many organizations have jumped on board to sponsor this event; it just goes to show the kind of community we live in! Palm Springs certainly knows how to have a party and do good things at the same time. Plus we can't wait to see everyone's wigs for the "wig walk!"

This year’s musical theme is Hairspray. “Hairspray inspired us with the tagline, ‘When you follow your own beat, there’s no limit to how far you can go.’” Johnson added. The musical won eight of 13 Tony Awards in 2003.

Tickets are $35 each and include a hosted bar and Broadway-style entertainment by Toucans, and hors d’oeuvres by Lulu California Bistro. Guests are encouraged to grab a wig and a can of extra-firm hold hairspray and be on hand for a rollicking afternoon. Bouffant and beehive hairdos are encouraged as are early ‘60s fashions. For those without poodle skirts, desert casual attire is appropriate. Each ticket also includes a 20% off coupon good on one purchase from any Angel View resale store.  The stores generate much needed funds for Angel View’s programs and services for children and adults with disabilities.

Event sponsors include AFLAC, Best Best & Krieger, Dickey's Barbecue Pit, Heads Up Hair Design, Maryanov Madsen Gordon & Campbell, Carole Landon, Maryellen Hill & Associates, Maximum Security, Piranha Swim Team, Vacation Palm Springs, Wayne Patterson, and Woody's Burgers Palm Springs.

Jesus’ Story

Jesus, 23, has cerebral palsy and a seizure disorder. Once he completed his special education classes, his parents, who both work full-time, needed a place where he could continue to grow. He started our Day Program 10 months ago.

He was shy when he first arrived and prone to speaking one word answers. So we were thrilled to see him open up and use full sentences when he responds to staffers like Hope, whom he clearly adores. Jesus participates in all activities. He knows the routine and where he’s supposed to be. When it’s time to leave, he grabs his bag, waits for him mom, and looks forward to coming back.
